The Moot Hall

The Old Gaol

The Hexham Old Gaol is reputed to be the oldest purpose-built prison in England.

The gaol was built under the order of William Melton, the Archbishop of York, in 1330–33. It held prisoners from Hexhamshire and also, in the 16th century, from the English Middle March, before their trial in the Moothall Court Room nearby. Continue reading 'The Old Gaol'»

Hexham Abbey: A Brief History

There has been a church on the site of Hexham Abbey for over 1300 years since Etheldreda, Queen of Northumbria made a grant of lands to Wilfrid, Bishop of York c.674. Of Wilfrid’s Benedictine abbey, which was constructed almost entirely of material salvaged from nearby Roman ruins, the Saxon crypt and apse still remain. Hexham Races

For over 100 years, the historic market town of Hexham has hosted National Hunt racing and is currently recognised as the only racecourse in Northumberland. This was not always the case, however, as race meetings were also held in the areas of Rothbury, Belford, Elsdon, Wark and Morpeth, before Hexham`s popularity and reputation, amongst other factors, rendered these courses obsolete.
