Hadrian’s Wall Tour (Central Section)

Starting and ending in Hexham, this tour first of all takes in Corbridge Roman Site. From here we travel north and west along the Military Road to Brunton Turret. After a brief stop it’s on to Chesters Roman Fort and finally the Temple Of Mithras, passing a 460 metre long section of wall at Black Carts Turret. For the homeward bound leg it’s a drive through the dramatic Northumberland countryside taking in the villages of Newbrough, Fourstones and Warden.

Corbridge Roman Site – 1.5 hrs
Astride the intersection of Roman Dere Street and Stanegate, Corbridge was initially the site of a series of important forts. But after Hadrian’s Wall was fully commissioned it developed into a prosperous town, a tempting leave-centre for off-duty Wall garrisons. Abandoned after the collapse of Roman rule in Britain, the town centre has been systematically excavated, producing the fascinating array of finds now most attractively displayed in the site museum.

Chesters Roman Fort – 1 hr
Chesters Fort is in a beautiful setting, alongside the River North Tyne, adjacent to the remains of what must have been a most impressive bridge across the river. The fort was built here to protect the vital river crossing, and is in fact the best-preserved cavalry fort in Britain.

Temple Of Mithras – 20 mins
Temple of Mithras
A fascinating temple to the eastern god Mithras, with facsimiles of altars found during excavation. Sited like many Mithraic temples near a military base, it was founded in the 3rd century, and eventually desecrated, probably by Christians. Nearby, but no longer visible, was the shrine of the water nymph Coventina.
