Hadrian’s Wall Tour (End to End)

This tour is laid out going from west to east, however if you’d prefer east to west just let us know.

Starting in Carlisle you will travel east through the village of Brampton and out past Lanercost Priory to meet Hadrian’s Wall at Banks Turret. Continuing past Birdoswald Roman Fort you will meet the B6318 Military Road and closely follow the route of the Wall through to Vindolanda. Here you can explore for an hour or so then it’s off to the pub for lunch. After lunch it’s a 20 minute or so walk around Black Carts Turret, then Chesters Roman Fort. From here it’s along the Military Road to Newcastle where you can catch a train or enjoy the city at your leisure.

Tour Itinery

Vindolanda Fort – 1.5 hrs
Vindolanda and the Roman Army Museum bring history alive. Vindolanda is a fascinating Roman fort and civilian settlement lying just to the south of Hadrian’s Wall. The Roman Army Museum, situated beside one of the best preserved sections of the Wall, offers a captivating insight into the garrisons of Hadrian’s Wall.

Lunch at The Twice Brewed Inn – 1hr 15 mins
The Inn is set amongst some of the most breathtaking scenery in England and stands in the shadows of Steel Rigg, without doubt one of the most dramatic parts of Hadrian’s Wall. The Twice Brewed is close to all the main Roman sites – Vindolanda, Housteads and The Roman Army Museum. Check out their menu here.

 

Black Carts Turret – 20 mins
Black Carts Turret, also known as Turret 29a, is a well preserved 460-metre (1,509 feet) length of Hadrian’s Wall including one turret.

Chesters Roman Fort – 1 hr
Chesters Fort is in a beautiful setting, alongside the River North Tyne, adjacent to the remains of what must have been a most impressive bridge across the river. The fort was built here to protect the vital river crossing, and is in fact the best-preserved cavalry fort in Britain.
